Ice jam at Pleasant Valley, Conn., March 1st, 1910. This photo was taken below the bridge and looks upstream. The bridge shown was washed out in the 1938 flood. The smokestacks and building to the right are part of the Rogers Rake Shop. Currenly, the fishermans parking lot occupies part of the area where the rake shop once stood. Ice jams in the Farmington River like this one in the photo were not uncommon in the first half of the 20th century, and in earlier years. Now they seem to occur less frequently. Why is that? Perhaps the more controlled flow of the river by flood control dams is a factor.
