A succession of wooden bridges spanned the West Branch of the Farmington River in Pleasant Valley. On January 22, 1891, the "Long Bridge" was washed down river by a flood and frozen in an ice jam. The bridge had tall wooden sides but was not covered. In 1908 The "Long Bridge" was replaced by a steel structure, which was washed away in the 1938 hurricane.
